I’m the exact opposite. I treat cash like free money and with my credit card, there’s a record

I agree. Whenever I have cash like a $20, $50 $100 bill, I feel so anxious spending it whereas if its in my debit card its feels less value.

It’s called the envelope system. Been around for decades!

I find it mildly humorous that the booklet is stuffed with fake $1000 bills

Dave Ramesy called it the envelope system back in the 90's.

It’s funny bc I think cash stuffing is more of a millennial trend right now! A lot of the “cash stuffers” I watch are adults with careers, kids, mortgages and 10+ year credit card debt.
As a 23yo it’s amazing seeing these people pay off so much debt with this method but I’m definitely not seeing enough of the under 25 crowd budget (unless they’re all on tiktok which I don’t have lol) But overall I really love watching cash videos! It motivates me to not get into frivolous CC debt and actually start saving with a purpose instead of just looking at numbers on a screen!

As a Gen X, I use both methods.
First, I pay most of bills online using a debit card.
Then I withdraw cash from an ATM and use that to cover my other expenses and grocery shopping.
When I run out of cash, I stop shopping.
It causes me to stick to my tight budget, use a list and shop around.
When you go into a shop and the cash is limited, you cannot overspend.
And NO, I don’t have a credit card and haven’t had one for 30 years.

This gives me hope for the future. When you open up your wallet, you're able to see the bank notes, so you keep an eye on your finances regardless of whether you want to, so it makes it easier to balance your budget.

Using a spreadsheet is more than enough for me.

There's a show called Til Debt Do Us Part from a few years back and that was the whole premise: only using cash and documenting it. My ex and I used this method to pay off our debt and continued it for many years for our budget. Worked wonders! Highly recommend it.

I always prefer cash especially for tax evasion purposes

I've heard of this method, but using cash is somehow less painful for me than credit. When I use a card, it creates a ledger of my purchase at my bank or credit card provider that will basically exist forever! Cash purchases are untraceable, easily forgotten, and almost seem ephemeral.

Love the lotr reference! I was hard core cash user until 23 where I went digital for bills and only just now have a credit card (or rather my wife does). She spent 4k in a month and we are both sold on just getting rid of it and burning the junk mail.

Yup. It is real easy for $50 per a transaction on card to add up. I start sweating when my purchase transaction are in the $100.

I love the concept but am too lazy to go to the bank every couple weeks to get cash out.

In the event of a break in or fire this can be a lot more damaging though too. Because it's harder to actually prove you had cash in a house insurance will sometimes fight you about it, and there are limits on how much they'll pay out for it too typically.

I treat my physical cash as money to blow in stupid things, which has led to me counting my money for the first time in 6 months and finding out I had $700 in there

I spent the $700 on my car insurance :(

Been doing this for like forever since 2012.

Everyone would laugh at me for that because I was determined not to overspend and to live within my means.

It also gave me focused goals on savings which has come through for me.

Basically, the Dave Ramsey envelope method
