US President Joe Biden delivers remarks at the Department of Labor on the state of the American economy.
Biden is commuting the prison sentences of roughly 1,500 people placed under house arrest during the Covid-19 pandemic in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.
“America was built on the promise of possibility and second chances,” Biden said after Thursday’s announcement.
During the pandemic, prisons were a hotbed of infections, so to curb the spread of the virus some inmates were released to serve the rest of their sentences under house arrest.
Biden’s commutations are for people who have served at least a year under home confinement after their release from prison.
Biden, 82, is also pardoning 39 Americans convicted of non-violent crimes.
