This sort of reminds me of Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, and Isaac Newton. Tycho Brahe took very precise and meticulous measurements of the planets' apparent positions in the sky. Kepler, who assisted Brahe in his final year, was able to interpret the data and develop his three laws of planetary motion. Isaac Newton derived from these laws a single law of gravitation that explained all three.

it should be mentioned that heaviside was rejected by the scientific community for most of his career as well. he also discovered the application of imaginary numbers in circuit analysis.
