Fonias river and first lake (vathra) at Samothraki island

The Fonias river and its pedestals. Its gurgling waters flow throughout the year. It begins its journey from the imposing Mount Saos and empties into the northern shores of the island. This whole route along the stream is suitable for hiking.

The route starts from the main road next to the sea (near the Tower of Fonias) and follows an uphill course for couple kilometres. As you walk along the riverside paths, you can enjoy the shade of the centuries-old plane trees. Suddenly the walker is confronted with the sight of carefree tourists enjoying their bath on the first platform.

Vathra (Baths) iopare the natural pools created by the flow of the stream and are ideal for a pleasant bath, especially in the summer months.
