Let's climb a tree with shuko; in theory, let's climb a tree. Let me know how to make this work?

I hear a lot of comments and questions about climbing with shuko. Here, I'm testing a few theories that I have heard. Sadly, I have yet to find one I can use in the real world. Mind you, Im quite happy to have them as a close combat tool.

With all that said, If you have a way or an idea of how this could work, please let me know in the comments. If there is one I haven't tried before, I will head back out to the woods and attempt this new technique.

The people who would use those practiced climbing trees without no aid at all. Ive seen people who climb for a living to harvest things like wild honey, spices and some fruits scale a tree streight up with only a small piece of rope. These just provided a gripping force to allow them to climb faster. Unless your a skilled climber already, these arent going to be a magic pill so to speak.

Don't claim like a cat, climb like you're hugging a tree. Put the spikes towards you on the opposite side of the tree.

As long as the tree doesn’t get damaged i would recommend boot spikes such as what arborists use.

If you can climb a tree barehanded, those would simply add grip. Reaching around the trunk, your own body weight would force the trines deeper. It seems similar to climbing ice with ice picks. Your weight increases friction if used properly.

I’m an arborist and we use something sort of similar. When we use climbing spurs, you have to kick them into the tree at a slight in and downward angle if you just go straight into the tree it doesn’t grip enough and will slide right out like you show or tear. If you are going to attempt a climb I would recommend using a lanyard too, I don’t see a way of being able to effectively use these without something else supporting your weight as you go to advance.

Also climbing a live tree with those is going to severely impact its immediate health and life span, we never use spurs unless it’s a full removal. you would be introducing tons of holes directly into the wood for insects/diseases to get into the tree 😢

I think putting them around the tree and giving it a bear hug means your weight will go into the tines and drive them into the tree for grip but that only works on very specific sized tress

Huge physics guy here!
The tines are not providing something that can hold your weight rather they are increasing your coefficient of friction to move your weight in whatever direction you may choose. In Layman's terms, you are merely making the tree less slippery to whatever force you are applying TO THE CENTER of the tree. Your problem is that your weight is always going to be pulling perpindicular to the tines due to the direction the are facing, ergo why if you apply force to the tines at an angle (against gravitational force) to the tree it is holding more of your weight. Climbing with these requires a refashioning of the tine angle to hold your weight more effectively!

Put those spikes on your feet (JLaser did a video similar to this) that allowed him to climb a tree. Also angle the spikes down so it is less likely to slip out of the tree.

IDEA: keep the hands like you are hugging the tree, keeping 40% of the tree's arch between your claws and 60% outside behind the tree
