i used to think this song was just about being in love with someone embarrassed to being seen with you, but seeing every line and detail laid out in this video made it suddenly click for me what she was *actually* writing about here

its actually about the emotionally confusing feeling of having no-labels no-strings situationships where you both experience comfortable intimacy that's almost like domestic love when hanging out alone, watching tv after sex or smoking up or grocery shopping together, but you both have to performatively show each other and yourselves that its not a big deal, and reiterate to each other that its all good to flirt/sleep with other people, and very carefully not "be sappy" or "do couple stuff" in public

but sometimes that feels hollow or gets exhausting and you find yourself just wanting to return to each other or hanging out at the end of the night or free weekends or after a bad day at work because its comfortable intimacy that feels simple. it feels like simple, like a loving feeling, but you both can only act like that when you're all alone. and some nights you want them to just come over but you dont know if they will or if they're out with someone, so you stay up late to see if they come

This song reminds me of how me and my bestfriend act. My straight bestfriend and I often do things like cuddle and hold hands and I asked him if he liked our dynamic and he said absolutely. It wouldnt be so difficult if he wasnt dating a girl, idk how we both can have a mutual feeling of caring and love and yet be ignored by each other. this song 2 me is about being attached to my toxic friends and unhealthy crush(?) bc of my anxious attachment n fear of abandonment. at this point i know i should go and move on but i can't since nobody else will love me and i crave validation from him lol and the 'talking to everyone but me/im staying up later just in case you come up and ask to leave with me' line rly hits i have severe anxiety so seeing my emotional support system basically abandon me everywhere we go for someone better than me in every possible way feels hollowing but when we're in private they start caring about me.the 'holding hands under the table' line also feels just like this since they only care about me where they won't be embarrassed of me. the 'table' in this case is the secrecy of it all, like my existence is meant to be a secret. it's sad but i crave the touch and warmth they give me sometimes. at this point idc anymore theyre all i have he's all i have i love him so much
