US Gov says 'Don't use a VPN'. Should you trust it?

When the US intelligence tells you anything, there's a 50-50 chance the opposite might be correct. The US government is seeking moral redemption. After decades of telling us that we should trust it with backdoors into our communications, it finally backfired spectacularly. Just as the privacy advocates have always been saying – that you can't have encryption badckoor just for the good guys.

"For months or longer", Chinese government hackers held access inside US internet service and telecommunication providers collecting all of our browser histories, phone data and much more. This of course is a major national security risk.

As any high-ranking politician, journalist or a random citizen, could be held at ransom for all the dirt the Chinese government now holds on each AT&T and Verizon customer. We'll probably see a major spike in support for Chinese policies as all the naughty secrets of key elites and individuals will be held for blackmail or it might "accidentally" leak to the press.

That's how serious this is. So now the US government is officially endorsing end-to-end encryption and private communication. But... that's a bit hyperbolic. Only one agency – the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, endorses it.

Encryption backdoor that only the "good" guys can access, does not exist. One man's backdoor is another man's vulnerability. That came out wrong. Or did it?

So CISA has issued a privacy and security tutorial for all Americans to adopt. And it contains a lot of points about which I have lots to say. I already talked about the Signal recommendation. I can talk about more if you are interested, so let me know in the comments.

But there was one recommendation that I did not expect to see. It goes against something that I've been recommending on my channel for a long time. It's about using a personal VPN, or Virtual Private Network.

I think what they're trying to say is, "Don't use a VPN that we can't bully into giving us your traffic logs."

Do I trust my vpn provider? No.
Do I trust the vpn provider more than my isp? Oh yeah I do

There is no way NordVPN isn't goverment owned. Their marketing budget is about the same as a small country

I live in Sweden and work within the IT security branch.
The part THO says about the Swedish police wanted to raid and seize Mullvads servers, only to realise that the data they wanted, didn't exist. So they had to turn around and leave. I also know another fact, that they deliberately chose to have their HQ within a "military zone". Reason why, is that the military don't deal with citizen issues like the Police does, but the police have (or had), a law, where they were not allowed to raid anything within a military zone. I truly do trust Mullvad. And if you don't believe the "police raid", search it up and you'll see articles about it. Stay safe!

50-50? Their credibility is so poor, if they say the sky is blue, I'm looking outside to verify.

OK daddy government. I'll totally do what you say. With how you've never been wrong about anything and always acted in my interests rather than against them, clearly you can be trusted with important decisions about my privacy.

Basic rule: Do the opposite of what the government says

This is like when a cop tells you that you don't need a lawyer because you aren't under arrest. That's absolutely when you need a lawyer because they're lying.

I'd apply the same principle when told by a government agency not to use a VPN service. Key takeaway is make sure the lawyer and VPN service provider you choose are the right ones.

Do your research and never blindly trust either one.

My carrier has data tracking everywhere I've been and I'm sure there's years' worth of it. But every time someone goes missing and police actually need to track their phone, carriers conveniently have little to nothing.

I trust my VPN providers more than my ISP.

the most important thing about protecting yourself online is obfuscation. Tell the truth, but also tell every lie in between.

Use a different birthday on every service that asks for one. Use fake names, use fake locations. Any accurate data that gets mixed in will be just as unreliable as the rest. It is actually so much easier than you might think. This account might have my real info on it, but every other account has completely different credentials. You need to start from the beginning with security in mind, going back to try and secure whats already there is nearly impossible...

key word, obfuscation.

Hey, the algorithm is working ! Saw your video at top of my feed. Thank you for all your hard work!

The argument of the government doesn't make sense. The VPN provider has way less potential abusing the data. The worst attack that can happen to you is coming from your own government. Always. Not some random company on the Cayman Islands.

VPNs don't give or share data for government requests as easily as ISPs do because of the local laws.

When the government says not to do something, you shoulf DEFINITELY consider doing it!!!

4:21 In my country (Brazil) it's illegal for ISPs to commercialize our data, including DNS logs. We may be on a crappy political and economic situation, but at least that's pretty good.

legitimately shadowbanned. Insane. Keep making these videos, they're important, especially now.

It's reverse psychology. The government and the major VPN providers are in it together.
