Why don't people understand that the resin doesn't just sit on the wood, it actually soaks into the fibers, fundamentally changing the physical properties of the wood. You don't need to reinforce epoxy resin because it IS the reinforcement.

What I didn't see was someones uncle lean on it. As an uncle myself, I have broken many tables by simply leaming on them. Never underestimate how powerful the lean of the uncle is.
