Those are the gentlest spurs I've ever seen. My girl's old spurs from when she was a kid were literal spikes

Not to mention, horses willingly scratch their itches with the barbed wire fences that are usually used for enclosure

For people that dont ride, squeezing the horses sides with your ankles works, but spurs create a smaller, more defined point of contact. This is used for turning.

I expect that, as a force multiplier, they would make gently tapping a horse have the same effect as kicking without spurs would, and you don't want to kick with spurs lest you draw blood.

The true purpose of spurs is not to force a horse to do or go where it doesn't want to. Rather, when used properly, spurs have the ability to increase the communication between horse and rider. Although, like many other tools, they are misused and can cause harm and pain to the horse.

Spurs as an idea aren't abusive, it's the way some are designed and used.
In general, a spur is designed to be an extension of the leg, something to make it easier to make contact.

Some spurs, specifically ones with spikes and stuff on them, are rough on the horse and if used too harshly can even cause flesh wounds and scarring on the horse's sides.
Horses are very fragile despite being these big and powerful beasts. They have sensitive skin, regardless of what other equestrians say.
Spurs aren't abusive; some people are.

I genuinely thought spurs were those spiky wheel things from cowboy movies and was really confused as to where this was going 😂

The most sensitive part of the horse is the nose. (Pretty sure) and if she is using it on his nose, and he is not flinching then she is using it properly and safely. Yes it is true that some can be dangerous, but only if they are used incorrectly. Its never the equipment it is always the owner. Like there is no mean animal, just the owner and how they were raised ❤️
