Brazil migration: Country imposes new entry restrictions

Brazil has imposed new rules restricting the entry of travelers, who have been taking advantage of its no-visa transit policy.
Police say the country is being used by criminal organizations as a new trafficking route, to illegally enter the United States and Canada.

Al Jazeera's Monica Yanakiew reports from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It's quite simple. No matter how many problems the country may have, Brazil has always been that big brother who always tries to help as much as he can. The problem is that unfortunately a massive number of people use this help to commit crimes here and in other countries. They enter the country, get a visa, which is ridiculously easy to get, and then gain access to other countries. A lot of drugs and contraband were even being smuggled in this way. Fortunately, Brazilians realized that they were being used and now the rules have changed. Besides, Brazil already has its own problems to deal with.

I'm Brazilian and I've always thought this attitude of helping others was great, but the world is wild and Brazil can no longer afford the innocence of trusting everyone.

I'm from Poland and I'm not surprised by this immigration to Brazil, the Brazilian passport is very powerful, they can enter more than 173 countries without a visa, including Japan, South Korea, and the entire European Union, Russia, even the Scandinavian countries and Brazilians you don't need a visa, so practically without counting neighboring countries and that's why Brazil has many Lebanese Syrian immigrants

Brazil is nation of refugees. Italians, japaneses, syrian, lebanesses refugees and many others came in long ago. The problem comes when those people want to use Brazil as a bridge and go north. That may create diplomacy problems with the US/canada even though we are not responsible for that.

Brazil is only demanding from foreigners originating from certain countries, what these same countries demand from Brazilians who try to enter them. Reciprocity. Just that!

As a Brazilian, I support this decision. Brazil is receiving many immigrants from neighboring countries in an uncontrolled manner and even if these people from Asia are just using the country as a route, it is very important to limit any possibility of entry.

Brazil has its own problem with poverty and unemployment i don't think they can afford to allow immigrants or refugees into their country.

In my oppinion the developed countries actualy like the problem because they need the cheap labour but since they can't open the door don't matter the quantity, they keep the botleneck in place to keep only a small flow. Brazil has made the right decision: those who want to stay are welcome to apply for a proper Visa in a Brazilian Consulate or Embassy, those who only want to go samewhere else using Brazil as a transit point will no longer be able to do so because the Brazilian autority will regulate. Would be interesting to know if Mr Fuloni works for a NGO as those are the ones who usualy oversee the "problem" because the flow must be kept, in small numbers but kept.

It's really sad how the USA, Canada and even Brazil are losing their characteristics by the invasion of Asians, specially from Indiaz Nepal, Bangladesh and even the Philippines. In the West we have pur own culture, traditions and people we don't want to look different in some years ahead.

The UN should collaborate with other countries to reach an agreement and provide assistance to those in need. Brazil is a wonderful country with a big heart, but individuals should abide by common sense and organize themselves properly when seeking entry into other countries.

Most are from Gujarat and Punjab, India. These people try to go to US or Canada.

there needs to be an international summit on asylum where all countries currently offering protection agree to STOP accepting applications in-country

That's very fair: asylum only for the real asylum seekers and refugees! The others may apply for a working/ studying visa.
