I had a 1992 F250 that was converted to ran on propane. So much cleaner fuel for engine longevity

I drove a CNG converted econoline back in the late 90s and couldn't tell the difference apart from the 50% reduction in overall range. This propane setup is cool because the driver can switch back and forth between gas and propane.

I’ve had several trucks that run on propane. Sucks in the cold weather when they freeze up. My dad used to build race engines and built quite a few high performance propane powered engines. High compression definitely makes up for the lower energy content. Another huge advantage back then was that there were no carbs to be finicky in off road situations. They run hot though. Bronze guides, seats etc are required to hold up to the heat. Engine oil stays cleaner than you would ever imagine. Pull valve covers off an engine and there is zero sludge. Just a little bit of petroleum jelly may be present.

Propane delivery driver here. I delivered to a school bus company that ran propane powered buses. The owner told me the motors would typically last 2x as long as a conventional diesel because propane kept the inside of the motor crystal clean. I know he was paying just over $2 a gallon for the propane vs. over $4 a gallon for diesel. Yes he had a yearly tank rental fee from Suburban Propane but that cost was trivial. I just wish Ford offered the propane prep package on all 7.3L motors instead of just the fleet vehicles only.

I would like to see a full on comparison between the Alliance Autogas propane set up on a 5.0L F-150 compared to the same truck running E-85 ethanol fuel.
- 0-60, 1/4 mile
- all the emissions stats for both
- fuel efficiency and operating costs.
- payload and towing differences. Maybe run the "Ike" with both!

I remember watching ‘Trucks’ tv show (I think that was the name) about 20 years ago and they added a propane booster system to a diesel truck and they were making some crazy power with it. It was almost like adding nitrous to a gasoline vehicle, except the tank was much bigger, could be used continuously (though was largely meant for towing uphill... and racing haha), and it didn’t tear up the engine. Funny how these things always come back around decades later.

Everything that old is new again. In 1991 I was working for the state of Texas and they ordered all of their trucks with propane and they were an absolute dog back then. If you pulled out in front of somebody, he was probably gonna get run over because you couldn’t get out of their way.
Caterpillar has been running LP engines for many years out here oil field . We have a V16 the G3516LE is a beast almost 50k hour TBO !

LPG was used in tractors in the late 40s through the end of the 60s. Most of them where shipped to Texas and Louisiana. They used a higher compression piston over gas version. I'd be interested in seeing a propane injection system for my diesel truck.

I've been running butane for a lot of years. Good stuff.

That propane system looks exactly like the LPG system I had installed on my Australian 2004 Ford Falcon 15 plus years ago. The car started on petrol and after 30 seconds, it switched over to the LPG system. The original sequential fuel injection system was retained. The LPG system had its own 50L donut tank in the spare wheel well and both fillers were together behind the fuel filler flap.

LPG is slowly disappearing in Australia. The price slowly rose until there was no cost savings and so the big fleets like taxis that were the main users of LPG moved away from it. As a result, fuel stations are gradually removing their LPG refuelling infrastructure, due to poor sales.

I think before going full electric we should look into alteritive fuels like propane etc

I put propane on my 2005 tundra back in 2012, love it, engine oil stays clean longer, has as much power, the fuel savings paid for my truck

Since propane burns so much cleaner and therefore doesn’t contaminate the motor oil as much. Oil change intervals can be greatly extended resulting in huge money savings to fleet vehicles on reduced maintenance costs.

I grew up in ND. Farmers/ranchers have been doing propane conversions for decades.

Propane is a fantastic gas alternative. Also, Roman is a fantastic interviewer

All this would do is raise the cost of propane.

It's about time they have been running propane since the 70's in southeastern Oklahoma, there is no natural gas for customers. Just propane.

Propane systems are probably a lot better now than they were. My grandfathers 1979 F250 Lariat had a 400 on Propane. Ran great! Not the best mileage but price wise was worth it. Was super cheap to run. But, unfortunately spark plugs rusted out, snapped off flush with the block due to moisture.
