CNA Correspondent gets into the underbelly of some of East Asia’s biggest cities to find out why some have been kept from progressing with the rest of society. In Shanghai, Emil Wan follows two migrant workers who work in China’s notoriously cutthroat food delivery industry. Dai Yazhen and Deng Erhu are among China’s growing army of delivery workers and ride-hailing drivers. But as China grapples with sluggish economic growth and unemployment, their road ahead looks uncertain. In Hong Kong, Deborah Wong examines the hurdles facing refugees after they arrive in the city seeking asylum. And she finds out, even after their non-refoulement claims are substantiated, life remains in limbo as resettlement could take decades, if it ever happens. In Saitama city near Tokyo, Michiyo Ishida sits down with ex-Yakuza-turned-pastor Tatsuya Shindo to learn about the tough transition facing former gang members as Japan’s organised crime groups see their numbers steadily shrink in the last two decades.

I have a casual delivery job in China, and I must say that this job is truly terrible. With the economic recession, many people are unemployed, so they joined this job, leading to serious competition. A normal person delivers 5 orders per hour, but to ensure on-time delivery, they must violate traffic rules and then get a small reward of 20 to 25 RMB. However, the cost of living is high, especially for important things like housing, education, and healthcare. Many delivery workers feel unfairness and anger, but nothing can be changed. One cannot fight the fate of the era, especially in China.

Singapore, stop complaining how other countries handle their refugee situation unless you're willing to take more refugees yourself.

As always CNA revel in hardship and bad news from places outside Singapore. At least Hong Kong allows these people to stay. They would have been locked up or kicked out of Singapore if they had tried to enter Singapore.
