Easy to drill into, or would it split and mess up the material? I just ordered one, but need to drill a hole in the top for a mercury vapor bulb for my tegu.

ive been wanting to get one, one problem . do you have to brumate them is it mandatory ? I'm in California it doesn't get cold enough to properly brumate, with their size how would I do it, put him in a fridge ? how?
