Rescue workers are searching for survivors after a major earthquake killed dozens of people and damaged more than 1,000 buildings in a remote region of Tibet, near Mount Everest.

At least 126 people were killed, with another 188 injured, after the earthquake hit the foothills of the Himalayas at around 09:00 local time on Tuesday, according to Chinese state media.

A large-scale rescue operation was launched, with survivors under additional pressure as temperatures were predicted to fall as low as -16C (3.2F) overnight.

Earthquakes are common in the region, which lies on a major geological fault line, but Tuesday's was one of China's deadliest in recent years.

Chinese government and people have shown the rest of the world once again what a competent nation should do. Rescue squad, mainly Chinese PLA mobilized in a hour. The earthquake happened 4000 meter above sea level. Tell me any other country on the planet is capable and willing to save people's lives like

Anyone notice how they try to minimise the word "China", even though literally every rescue effort has been sent out by the Chinese. It's still Tibet to the west.

The comments are full of pathetic political purposes, the whole of China is donating money for Tibet, and there are already $40 million in donations. Soldiers, policemen and firemen are risking their lives to help the victims. Everything here is chilling!

Sick that so many comments have so much "care" on the political status of Tibet, than the life or death of people there.
BS to me to say you care for their well being if you don't even care for their life.

People in Tibet are so kind, generous, and friendly! It’s heartbreaking and very sad to hear that so many people lost their lives, got injured, and lost their homes and everything 😞😞😞My heart feels hurt for what happened to them .

We were hit by an earthquake in Turkey in 1999. It was night and it lasted about 1 minute. I was a little kid and I remember my dad picking me up from my bed. The door wasn't opening. It was really scary. We couldn't enter the house for 10 days. I hope they get over it quickly.

I felt the tremor of this quake all the way here in Dhaka, Bangladesh 🇧🇩

I was still in bed when my apartment building slowly shook at around, 07:00am in the morning (in Bangladeshi Standard Time). The tremor from this quake forced my mother to step out of her room in panic.

Om Mani Padme Hum 🙏🏻
My thoughts are now with the people of Tibet.
