Oh boy so much missing Fredick the IV King? Yeah he is known as the Winter-King as he was made king of Bohemia by the Protestant Union that started the thirty years war and was driven out of Bohemia with in a year. As to the gardens they where planned by Elizabeth Stuart Fredrick´s wife. This was the weak spot that the French used to attack the castle. After 1618 Fredrick and his wife never returned to Heidelberg again, as the Province of the Pfalz was taken over bei Maximilian 1 of Bavaria as a punishment for asuming the titel of King of Bohemia against the will of Emperer Ferdinand II. In the late 19th century Wilhelm II wanted to rebuild the castle to it´s old state but the people of Heidelberg where against it, they wanted it to stay a ruin as a memorial of the French aggression, so he rebuilt instead Hochkönigsburg Castle in the Alsation region.
