Crack in the Ground and the Four Craters Lava Field

This video explores Crack in the Ground. I noticed most Crack in the Ground videos only go to the crack and nothing else. So this one I decided to include Green Mountain and the Four Craters which are of interest and related to the crack. Lots of volcanic history and fun things to look at in this area. Crack in the Ground is a volcanic fissure, created by shifting ground underneath. It is a very unique canyon in Central Oregon that all should visit.

The music playing in the background music was driving me crazy with how familiar it sounded. Then it hit me! It's Balamb Garden from FF8!

On a hot summer day you can explore this feature in comfort. Some parts of the crack are pretty deep and provide a natural cooling effect. It was fun walking south to see where the crack ended.

Educational and quite interesting. I'm going to have to get back out there myself--and check out the four craters. Thanks so much for posting.

So happy to see another Matt.Cook.Oregon video.
As a small land owner in Christmas Valley, I visited with a many generation local that mentioned Crater lake water showing up near Ana reservoir. That just came to mind as you mention the ash from Crater lake being at the floor of Crack in the ground. The water is believed to travel in underground lava tubes etc. Maybe that fact or myth would worthy of a video someday?

Matt, I consider your videos to be on the level of Nick Zentner's, among other geology type videos.
You are a reliable source of geology facts without being overwhelming, or pandering to the less intelligent.
When looking for videos about Oregon Geology I look through your content first!

I've never seen it from the air nor have I gone North. Another great video of a place I've been giving me more insight on the site. Couple good geocaches in the area also.

If you go with your kids during mid-late summer, show them beforehand what stinging nettles look like (sort of like mint, with pretty flowers at times). There are some in and in shady places around the crack. Touching those things can be very painful for quite a while. Nice video overview, and definitely an interesting place to explore, plus a little hike that gives you a nice shot of cool air on hot desert days.

Nice vid!! Got a camping spot near there we've been camping on for over 20 years. Heard from a couple local old timers that there is a crystal geode cave somewhere in that crack in the ground.
