I understand wanting your sifu to look good but this is ridiculous, it's overdone to the point of slapstick.

As a Chinese internal martial arts practitioner of Bagua and Taiji, I can say the student's reactions are real, but in the sense that they are willingly presenting their bodies as "frames" to receive and be sensitive to the teacher's energy.

I enjoy the video for what it is -- a demonstration of Wu style's body method.

friend, i've been involved with reality based self defense for some time, whilst still having respect for traditional styles--as a form of skill set acquisition, conditioning, fortitude building, etc...many people i've known, to at least one former teacher, sadly folded under the harshness of real pressure (real fast and brutal mugging). the experiences of those close to me have influenced me to see the traditional styles as valid but in need of tweeking/updates.

My teacher can achieve the same result, he achieved it by disrupting your balance so subtle by the time you realize you will fall so badly because you cannot recover from so much "off balance"so suddenly. My teacher practice the same Wu style and he is from Shanghai

Is it real or fake? It seems not following physical laws.

I'm a bit confused. Are you implying that the student is faking and just trying to show respect for the teacher? If so, this is actually what happens. I practice Yang style myself, and you do actually get tossed like this. The instructor himself even allows us to apply moves and this is what happens.

I've taken Tai Chi chuan, but I'm a beginner and still learning. However, I understand the concept.
The student's reaction to the master's applications are not exaggerated. Tai chi chuan applications are about going for certain areas of the body and provoking off balance if hitting the right areas. An example is the first application he does. Someone grabs you like the student did to the teacher, the elbows are the weak point. A weak stance will send them flying. Hope that clears things a bit.

I agree the student may seem to have overreacted, but as a student I also know why he did, sometimes it happens. if the student is experienced enough, he should be able to tell whether the teacher is right or wrong and there's nothing outsiders can say.

i'll have to give it a try then--and see what it is, i am actually drawn to it, which probably isnt obvious i guess (ha). because as an ex-combatives enthusiast, i used open handed slaps/strikes. as i get on i was sort of looking into styles as a hobbie for health, etc... thanks for the time btw :)

I am also not expert but have some wu-style training. Though it appears the student is helping or exaggerating, I would expect not. He is doing is "recovery, " making sure he still stands after tossed off balance. Not so easy to see in a video, but the instructor uses the whole body with very little force to throw the student off-balance. It does not take apparent force done this way. It is exactly the demonstration of the effectiveness of tai chi in such an application of defensive strategy.

I see. I'm sorry to hear that. Tai Ji is different from most traditional or arts in general. The techniques exist, but it's not so much about the techniques, it's about knowing how to defeat your opponent and remaining relaxed and calm, even under harsh situations. The principle is to use your opponent's force against them. It's also to be sensitive.

Like, you know when you blink if someone moves their hands to your eyes? That is the idea with Tai Ji.

It's not the styles. It's the individuals involved. Some people spend too much time in the dojo/schools and don't get a lot of reality exposure.

compliance of the student. hope it doesn't do too much of a disservous to the teacher who'll be in for it doing that abridged flinch on a big oaf. i'm sure he knows his stuff and the student is showing respect and reverence/sympathy/etc... but it looks odd because it is a bit--all said

哈哈,這是傳統武術的大毒草!
很好的反面教材,
看了令人面紅,
數千年中華文化孕育出這樣的奇葩,
真令人無語……

really if you think about it who cares if they don't believe it only means they don't have enough information to believe it, never experienced it or their teacher has never seen fit to learn that aspect of it because the teacher doesn't believe. I never even dwell on the non believers because it's their limited aspect not mine it really not that serious.

i'm okay with what i said, it was respectful and balanced. i've seen enough to offer an opinion like this. this could be the master that is the exception to the rule, fine. but what i said applies more often than not--i reread my original post and find it gentle and hedging. if it's really his skill level, he should be revered and respected as a-typical for what's out there mate. no disrespect intended :)

Bad look for Tai chi. Reactions are BS. Sad bc the technique doesn't look bad.

The student's strange movements is simply a means to dissipate the excess energy imparted by the instructor. It's strange, but not exaggerated. It simply is.

As professor Miaki in the (ridiculous) Karate Kid movie says, bad kungfu, ok; good kungfu, ok; kungfu so-so, you'll be smashed like a tomato. This video shows top notch kungfu (a word that means "perfection", not the technique or style, so it's ok to call tai chi s form of kungfu practice). Don't even think of trying it in actual fight. And when you reach the stage shown in the video, either the fight won't happen, or it will be finished long before your enemy approaches you.

too dramatic to speak the least for the student!
