Chump Change, Goodies & Rare Parts 1981 Oldsmobile 98 Junkyard Find. It was an all around good day in the wrecking yard. Not only did I find over $28 in change and a bag full of tools but I even found a rare aluminum hood in great shape on this 81 Olds Ninety Eight 4 door Recency. I had been looking for a good aluminum hood for a 2 door Delta 88 that I have, for a good while now. Ive found them before in the yards but they are always in really bad shape. This one was darn near perfect.

That was pure 80s luxury. I had a Buick Park Ave this body those cars ride like you're sitting on your living room sofa holding a steering wheel. Cars today just don't have that nice floaty boaty ride

Whoa Nelley, change makes dollars, and dollars make sense. The parking lights in the bumper fit 1980 to 1990 Olds Delta 88/Custom Cruiser and 1980 to 1984 Olds 98s. They are often cracked on many cars.

We got the VIN, we win: 1G3 for US made Oldsmobile, A for manual seat belts, X for 98 Regency, 69 for four door, Y for 307 Olds V8 with four barrel, aka RPO code "LV2", X is a check digit, B (not 3) for the 1981 model year, M for Lansing, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. This one has the THM200-4R transmission as you can see it on the shift quadrant. Possible #83 Silver Fawn exterior paint, or maybe #45 Light Jadestone, tough to see and we did not get the tag, so we cannot brag. But the tag would be something like this:

B for 1981 model year, 3CX69 for four door Olds 98 Regency, 09A, B, C, etc, for September 1980 build, M for Lansing, MI assembly, AM6 possibly for split bench seat 45/55 style, 83L/83U (or 45L/45U) for the paint code, the vinyl top code would be there (possibly 11T), and other processing data. An aluminum hood wouldn't have any value to me, since weight is the last thing that's an issue on a 98. LOL. When those bend, they fold like a cheap suit, so it's tough to repair them when they do go bad. Give me a nice steel hood any day.

That's a good find on the tools, even if some of them are imports, there's usually always a mix of imports with the US in a bag like that. BTW: I dropped you a line on the ratchet if you got my message.

Yes, the two door versions of the 98 were harder to find for many reasons: when these were sold (through the 1984 model year in RWD), there were other options within the GM divisions and even within Olds. You had the Cutlass Supreme RWD two door and the Delta 88 two door (like you/your brother and I have). The step up to the 98 wasn't worth it for many, and those that did step up to a 98 likely couldn't/wouldn't swing the Cadillac (by '84, the extent of the HT4100 disaster wasn't really in full swing, but it was getting there as the early HT4100s were out of warranty by then and owners started seeing big repair bills).

Whoa Nelley, a 98, ain't it great? It's the (aluminum for you) hood that makes it good. A shade of Jade (??) may have you made in the shade. Was a beauty in '81, now it's done. Wasn't cheap, now it's a heap. You found some many a tool, that's kinda cool. Got yourself some pennies, quarters and many a dime, that's just fine. This one will be flat, that's that. Going to get squished and we're kinda pissed.

love your channel, your almost always on the money, especially on the GM cars and trucks. i thaught those were chevy truck rims also when you were walking up to the car, but i think those may be Hammer rims from the late 80s and early 90s.

Seems like 2021 is going to be a great year for you Benny! You finally got that aluminum hood/hinges you've been looking for in addition to a chunk of change, a CB radio, and a bag of tools! Not to mention the plastic gas tank you found the other day!
Kinda wish you got the 8 track as well as that's a hard to find option in 1981. 1982 was the last year of the factory 8 track option so finding a factory one in a 1981 car is definitely the last generation.
Maybe you'll do a giveaway with it and I'll be happy to pay for the shipping/handling. My 78 Caddy project will definitely need it ^-^

Glad you all did not get any ice and snow. We are getting hit bad in Tennessee. You need to grab that radio. The old Delco units are getting hard to find.

Nice find Sir...looks like you found someone’s junkyard bag. Shame to see the Regency in that condition....in my mind they are still new cars :) A 2 door Regency would be a nice find...glad you saved the aluminum hood. The bumpers on that one looked to be nice as well. You really have to start taking orders for those of us who are in the rust belt. I bet you could have a decent side hustle.

I bought a radar detector like that too, I think older than that, just because it was old and kind of neat.

Radio would flip fairly easily but it's not big money.

Reminds me of the 84 Electra we had, same plush seats and all the power options, same 307, probably the same marshmallow ride and just adequate power.

You get the Eldorado one car behind this one, too? Guy up here was trying to sell one like that most of 2019 for like $7500, I thought that was way high.

Took my driver’s test in dad’s 1980 Olds 98 Regency. Winter of ‘79 there was a union strike at the GM plants so build quality wasn’t quite as good as it should have been. The 2-door coupe demand for those wasn’t very high so they are rare ones to find, most Olds buyers would opt for the Toronado instead. Hopefully you snagged those wheel skirts too

A Fuzzbuster? Proof that this car had an old school owner. They used to advertise in "Popular Mechanics" a lot back in the day.
