The beautiful statue of Victory in Louvre, Paris, has with respect to other archaeological work, a very sad history: French soldiers removed it from its location while the Greek local villagers tried to stop them from removing it from the ancient ruins. Then the French soldiers opened fire. This statue has a lot of blood upon it.

I remember reading about this when I wanted to know the etymology of the name Veronica and I found its Greek origin which includes pherein (to bring) and nike (victory).
