“There’s a Libertines song called ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, about how ‘they wish you luck and hand you a gun’. We took the title from the famous Wilfred Owen war poem that I read as a kid. Dad would talk to me about the First World War quite a lot, saying how a generation of young men were killed for half a mile of mud. He had this epic, tragic, overwhelming sense of the futility of it all but was somehow attached to this romantic idea that there will always be in some foreign field a little piece of earth called England” - Pete Doherty

This is the first of the three released so far that makes me feel at ease.

The more I listen to this song the more I think it's one of The Libertines best ever. It's like a modern classic already. Simply beautiful and I adore Carl's voice. I love Pete's writing and musicianship but not his singing (except for on You're My Waterloo) so I'm glad he's not singing on this song. Carl though, he just gets better and better all the time. Still, I've never let Pete's singing put me off his great songs, I have all Babyshambles albums too. Carl is just in a different league for me though. Definitely my favourite performer. This song plus Dead For Love and Belly Of The Beast are my favourite songs on the album - at the moment, at least! My faves change all the time depending on my mood! So good to have this band back again. They're doing a gig here in Wales in January but typically I will be away at the time so can't see them! Talk about bad timing! Then again, I'll have to see if I can make another date on the tour. :)
