In this latest chapter of my Greek Islands adventure, I set out on another day of exploration around Naxos, starting with my daily ritual—a stop at the local bakery for a heavenly chocolate croissant. However, a coffee spill sends me back home for an early clean-up, marking the start of what turns out to be a rather gloomy day on the island.

The vibrant blues of the Aegean have faded into shades of grey, casting an eerie atmosphere over Naxos. The beaches, once bustling with life, are now empty, offering a quieter, more reflective side of the island. But this overcast day leads me to an unexpected discovery—the haunting ruins of the Alyko hotel complex.

Hidden on the southwest cape of Naxos, Alyko is famed for its stunning coves and beaches, but it also holds a secret: an abandoned resort that was never completed. Now, its crumbling walls serve as canvases for street artists from around the world, transforming the derelict site into an extraordinary open-air gallery. The contrast between the decaying structures and the vibrant murals is striking, offering a powerful reminder of how time and art can reshape our perceptions of beauty.

To wrap up the day, I return to my favorite spot for chicken pitas, this time sitting down at a table to see if the restaurant lives up to its reputation when dining in. Join me as I navigate through the gloom and discover the unexpected charm that Naxos has to offer, even on its darkest days.

Tony, I have come to understand from watching your annual journey to the Greek islands, the appeal and excitement of exploring the “road less travelled”. What a great discovery. An unfinished, abandoned hotel brought back to life. I was NOT expecting that. Amazing! I am so sorry that your “dining in” experience was not enjoyable. The restaurant did seem to be a bit noisy and distracting as well. Let’s hope your next chicken pita is back to its previous standard of deliciousness! Most people get frustrated when there is a cloudy/rainy day during their summer vacation. I consider it a rare chance because of the change of colours. Always have a plan B for such days and a waterproof bag for the electronics!
