It's amazing how a little difference like third person vs first person can make the exact same song either a fun bop or just absolutely devastating

Jules Shear is an absolute genius. One of the all time great songwriters.

It is just another tragedy that Jules was never bigger than he deserved. This album is a gem...lost to time. Thanks for the upload. If only society "knew what they want".

I realize I’m a little late to this party but one of my favorite albums is “Walking A Changing Line (The Songs Of Jules Shear)” it just shows the brilliance of this man’s writing.

He was a very good song writer - just others took his tunes in remakes and made them into huge hits. This of course was done a year later (1986, this was in 1985) by the Bangles. It is the exact same song by them made into a top 40 hit.

I don't blame the Bangles for picking this one to cover - it's a story many guys relate to.

In my Bangles playlist with his demo (which sounds better, IMHO) and their cover. Thanks for the upload!

Great tune, great writer/singer. Watch Dog is in my "very personal list" of greatest rock albums. this album is good too, but WD is just stunning, a revelation....

I am here because a book I’m reading mentioned about this song. :)

I love this song, but seriously the Bangles are the best thing to ever happen to this guy. The background vocalists sound like robots. I love it in the first person though, a man needs to cover it.

I know Jules wrote the song, and this is good, but I like the Bangles version better.

Do you also own Watch Dog? I got musical whiplash when I first heard it, because Jules's singing style was so much calmer and less piercing. Particularly, the first song "Whispering Your Name", begins with a very LOW-pitched melody, though it gradually works its way up and has great falsetto harmonies in the chorus.
I paid $80-something for a copy of the Japanese CD of Watch Dog. If it's a bootleg, it's the best damn forgery I ever saw. Sounds every bit as good as the vinyl, if not better!

Interesting. Why are his vocals so muffled?

O impressionante é que na voz dele ñ fez sucesso, i na versão das the Bangles fez, parece mesmo marcação contra o artista, porque tanto faz ele como as Bangles estão perfeito

The difference between this version and the much better known version by the Bangles is very telling. The change from first person to third person narrator exposes a lot about the male/female dynamic.
Especially now, since the imminent illegalization of abortion brings further burdens onto women. They have always had more to lose in a committed relationship. Even more, now.
