After this official whatsapp error, I put the sim in a new phone & was able to install WhatsApp on the new phone, but cannot restore my chats. The chats were encrypted & backed up. I have the password saved with me... but its not being accepted. Can you pls advise what to do?

It's not the phone because if you use a different number on the same phone, it is going to work. Perhaps it has something to do with a number that is connected to the Huawei ID (maybe 🤷🏽‍♂️)

That 1st email account you use.reset your phone put a new email account then your phone id will change then your sorted.
That's why when you put your whatsapp on another phone it works, but when you put on two different phones with same email account it doesn't work
