The reality is that it would be impossible to tie any currency totally to gold (or silver) because a) it would require an increasing supply of the precious metal to keep up with economic growth, or else the lack of the metal would inhibit economic growth to the rate at which new metal was coming into the system, and b) if you become a net importer of goods you risk shipping all of your metal overseas to settle your debts c) The reality is that, if you recall, the crash in 1929 occurred while the US was on the gold standard; didn’t stop that, did it? And that little debacle took 25 years to overcome - while we were still on the international gold standard d) The appeal of a gold standard is often promoted by people either ignorant of its downside problems, either deliberately or otherwise, people who would prosper by such a system (gold dealers, for example, who like to try to panic folks into gold all the time), people ignorant of history, or the tin-foil hat types who worry about zombie apocalypses and so on.
