CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Coach Kilmer (Jon Voight) disciplines Mox (James Van Der Beek) after he runs the wrong play in practice.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
In his first feature following the success of television's Dawson's Creek, James Van Der Beek stars as Jonathan Moxon, the back-up quarterback on his high-school football team, the West Canaan Coyotes. In West Canaan, the only thing that matters is football, and the man who matters is the one with 22 divisional championships, coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox, as the young "A" student is called, is wrapping up his senior year on his way to Brown University in the shadow of his childhood friend, star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). With only five games until the end of the season, Kilmer pushes his players too hard, and Lance suffers a career-ending injury, forcing Mox to play and win the game. Now the starter, Mox must deal with his newfound celebrity; the attentions of Lance's girlfriend, head-cheerleader Darcy (Ali Larter); prevent his friends and fellow players Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan) from self-destructing; prevent Coach Kilmer from crushing everybody; and hold on to his own girlfriend, Lance's sister Jules (Amy Smart). Oh, and Mox must also win the championship and prove himself the hero.

Those dads and the sheriff at practice are the archetypes of the phrase “peaked in high school”.

And now this is called the "Spread offense"

Mox was ahead of his time!

Fun fact" Mississippi Valley State actually averaged 60 points a game using that offense (still a NCAA record)

These dads who can't get their heads out of high school football days... I live in a town full of them. Friday nights were great, but practice just down right sucked.

John Vought really killed it in this movie. Best actor in the film. Nailed the accent and aggressiveness

The only thing that makes this a little loophole. The fact that Bud Kilmer coached the parents 27 years ago and he looks the same age as the parents.

I know this isn’t some pinnacle of Jon Voight’s career, but damn he nailed this role.

I was a back up QB my freshman year 1996 @ Hart High Newhall, CA. Kyle Boller (future NFL QB) was the year ahead of me. He got hurt so after some shuffling I became the starter for the season. Its was tense but I loved it and we won Foothill League. This movie and scene resonated with me big time. Great memories!

I love this movie and i think it is one of the best because it touches on what goes on in high school sports namely football not only in Texas but in other states also with the corruption and playing hurt and the boosters and old people remembering their football glory and forcing it on kids, this movie really touches on that subject

I don't really consider "Varsity Blues" to be all that good of a movie but I absolutely loved Jon Voight's performance as Bud Kilmer, he really makes the movie a lot better than what it is.
