Uli Jon Roth ist einer der bekanntesten deutschen Rock-Gitarristen. Er gilt bis heute als innovativer Vertreter seiner Zunft und begnadeter Improvisator. Mit seinem Sound bewegt er sich zwischen Rock und Klassik.
Uli Jon Roth alias Ulrich Roth, gebürtiger Düsseldorfer, war von 1973 bis 1978 Gitarrist und Songwriter der Scorpions. Er trennte sich aus künstlerischen Gründen von der Band, da er Solo-Wege beschreiten und neue Sounds entdecken wollte. Zu seinen größten Einflüssen zählten stets Jimi Hendrix und Cream. Neben der Arbeit mit seiner Band Electric Sun komponierte Roth in der Folge auch Sinfonien und Concerti.
Roth wurde mit seinem Mix von Blues, Rock, Klassik und Metal zum Vorbild von Gitarristen wie Yngwie Malmsteen oder Metallicas Kirk Hammett. Anfang der 1980er entwickelte Roth eine sechs Oktaven umfassende Gitarre namens Sky-Guitar, die es ihm ermöglichte, Geigenstücke im Originalregister zu spielen. So konnte er als erster Gitarrist Vivaldis "Vier Jahreszeiten" mit einem Orchester aufführen. Der musikalische Innovator widmet sich auch der Ölmalerei und der Philosophie.
