Flashback: Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Looking back at how the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 made history for Sony Ericsson - their first Xperia phone.

After a series of successful feature phones, Sony Ericsson suddenly found itself in need of a touchscreen phone. In the past the company had used the touch-enabled UIQ front end for Symbian OS, but its fate was uncertain – the Symbian Foundation formed with Nokia at the top, so its preferred S60 was chosen as the Foundation’s main interface.

Sony Ericsson didn’t have the in-house expertise to create a new touch-driven phone quickly, so it tapped HTC to create a new model – the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. While today we associate the Xperia name with Android phones, that wasn’t the case at first.

Back in 2009, an acquaintance bought the Xperia X1 while I bought the Nokia N97. I remember that we frequently had phone wars comparing both devices.

Loved my X1. Software was a pain in the ass, but its X Panels did lead to Timescape UI.

Still better than Samsung's Omnia (Boy, Samsung had come so far. Before, they sucked so much that after trying the Omnia, I never wanted to touch one again. Now, my main phone's a Samsung because One UI is the best and most complete flavor of Android for me.)

I had this phone for quite a few years. I loved it so much. The looks, interface AND especially the qwerty keyboard. I felt so cool with it, I don't know why After that I had the Z1 and used it for several years. I'm starting to think that I like Sony phones the most.
