This episode discusses the oxidative properties of Potassium Permanganate which is widely used in organic chemistry to oxidize compounds. The manganese ion in the permanganate has an oxidation state of +7 is being reduced to +3 as it oxidizes glycerol to carbon dioxide and water vapor.
