This song is referencing a part of the Battle of Balaclava between the British-Ottoman and Russia that was fought during the Crimean War on October 25th, 1854. The 1st Baron Clyde Colin Campbell is said to have told his men "There is no retreat from here, men. You must die where you stand." His aide John Scott is said to have replied "Aye, Sir Colin. If needs be, we'll do that." You've gotta admit people were much braver back in those days.
