14 Despicable Me & Minions Deleted Scenes

Since Despicable Me came out in 2010, the world has been obsessed with the adventures of Gru, his family, and of course his yellow helpers the Minions. The Despicable Me series has three films, along with two spin-off Minion movies, the most recent being Rise of Gru. For over twelve years, animators have been creating stories with these beloved characters, but not all the scenes make the cut for the final film. There’s different reasons a scene might get cut, whether it’s not finished being animated, it doesn’t creatively fit the vision for the film, a character gets their scenes cut down for narrative clarity, or it’s just censored as the film franchise is meant to be kid-friendly. Some scenes can even be seen in the trailer for the film, only to be cut out when the film finally premieres. Often audience members are left confused, knowing they saw a different version of a beloved scene yet when they finally see the film, it’s changed, making them question reality. We don’t always get an answer straight from the source about why this happens, but we have some theories that may explain why. Spanning over five films including Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Minions, Despicable Me 3, and Minions: Rise Of Gru, there are many storylines, plot points, and scenes that didn’t make it into the final product. Now that we’ve piqued your curiosity, join us for a look through the last decade of films for the scenes that didn’t quite make the cut in the Despicable Me and Minions Franchises!

Thankfully those early Gru designs weren't approved because Megamind was released the same year as Despicable Me so Gru would look a lot like Megamind and also both movies are about supervillains retiring from villainy

I actually like how Dru looked before they decided on his design. I like the original idea about Gru going to be more evil, but I like the movie all the same.

I’ve actually caught like 40% of these clips in the movies, but my favorite one (which I didn’t know was removed I thought it was a normal part!) is the cheese chase scene

Dru is a soft hearted person that's why they change punch into a kick, but i wonder what are they thinking in the scene if dru punch gru

The Minions being the fans going nuts over "context" is hilarious because that's me to a T lol

About the seal scene, it's probably just some scenes of the Minions being bored out of their minds in the ice cave before the yetis arrive, either before or right after Kevin left to find a Boss. The performing seals, clown make-up, and ice "circus" are probably just set up for the Minions desperately trying to entertain themselves - we see a little bit of that in the movie, like with snowball fights and a low-energy soccer match.
The line about "if this continued for much longer, the Minions would surely perish" _is_ actually still in the movie. And it's pretty interesting - I mean, these guys can survive literal nuclear explosions, but can die from an extended period of severe boredom?

I'm pretty sure the "Gruties" scene is included in most versions of the movie - it's been there every time I've watched it, at least. Maybe it was cut from TV versions for commercial breaks?

I had never heard of the crime-fighting Lucy scenes that had been removed in Despicable Me 3. That's hilarious, and it would have been fun seeing her get a bit more to do. But like you said, it was mostly likely cut for the sake of giving her more time to emotionally bond with the girls - and I'm not complaining, Lucy and the girls' interactions were pretty much my favorite part of that movie.

For the actual mirror scene Bob bumps into his reflection and realises it’s just him but in the deleted scene looks like when he bumps into it he starts to have fun

9:28 errrmm akshually ☝️🤓 gru is confirmed to command exactly 10, 400 minions. However, if you meant the largest number of minions that pierre coffin voices in any of the films, then yes, it would fall just short of 900 minions

(side note, there is only an original population of about 230 minions, counted and confirmed by matpat himself in a film theory vid)
