Flat Forehand vs Topspin Forehand in Tennis - Technique & Execution of Tennis Forehand Lesson. Which one do you hit most? Your shot must change depending on the type of ball you are receiving and what you are trying to do with it. In this lesson we will help you recognise the elements required to hit the perfect forehand topspin and flat shot and when you should be doing each one.

Flat forehands usually have a much lower net clearance and allow for maximum power generation, best executed on slightly higher balls with body moving through contact. Some forehand grips are better suited to hitting flat and the stance will also play a big part.

Topspin forehands help with consistency and control, taking power off the shot without losing racquet head speed. The modern forehand grips make it easier to generate spin but they do require some getting used to.

Awesome instruction. I like how you each demonstrate your contrasting styles and grips. It's nice to see the same shot repeated. It is really hard to see the differences until you see them over and over. The tactics drills look very useful. Will incorporate into my practices. Thanks guys

Good job guys. I’ve followed many videos throughout the years. But the precise descriptions provided and the dynamics behind the shots are amazing. What I like the most is when a specific shot, stance, grip is compared with the alternatives. Here is when you really get it.

You guys are so articulate. You spoke my thought exactly when it comes to the modern western forehand. The swing is abbreviated because it can’t extend far enough due to the downward facing angle. It’s a safe shot but can’t land the killer blow.

Guys, I am learning so much in order to safe my arm from harm and in order to crush my opponents 😂 Thanks a lot!

The elbow follow through and the swing approach to the contact point were only a few of valuable Tipps and instructions.

Your content is always really high quality. This has been the best video so far I think. Really, really relevant to one of the things (there are many) I’m trying to work on. Tend to hit pretty flat but trying to learn how and when to add more top to improve my consistency. Thanks for the excellent video!!
You’ve asked lots of other people in reply to their comments what lesson they’d like to see next. If I Maybe something along the lines of “things the pros know and do that amateurs don’t but could”.
Thanks again.

Thanks so much for making and sharing this fantastic video. I’m an intermediate player coming back to the game after a gap of many years. As a child player I just hit the ball and went with what felt right. As an adult player I’ve taken a more systematic approach to understanding but often ran up against seemingly contradictory advice and didn’t know how it all fit together. This video along with your one on different grips has cleared up so much confusion. All the different pieces from different coaches have finally come together. Your explanations, demos and high quality production are outstanding. Thanks for the awesome work 😊👍🏻

It’s interesting to note that Federer is able to produce more spin with his eastern grip compared to Murray and Djokovic who use semi-western/western.
