Thanks Barry for another great video. What a lot of people miss is that there are a lot of blind music makers out there and using external hardware with real knobs is a lot easier than trying to use a plug-in with a graphic interface that can’t be used with a screen reader.. I have been looking at channel strips for the past three months or so and I tell you, it is a pain trying to really decide on one or the other..

From a cost effective perspective, I bought an ART Voice Channel a few months ago. It's not the best unit but for vocals, it definitely gets the job done. I can bypass EQ before and after the Compressor, great features all around.

The only issue with recording everything with no flavor is it affects decisions as you produce. Getting a drum sound that’s not really what you want could make you choose a keyboard sound based on the not so good drum sound. I think it is best to build a song with the sounds you hear in your head so that it sounds like the song you are writing.

I’ve been doing this with two Heritage Britstrips. If I want dual/serial compression for vocals I run the first strip into the line input of the second channel, set the first comp for quick attack/release low ratio and the second for slow attack/slow release limiting and finesse with the second strip’s eq. It’s 100% a winning setup to track/mix stereo and get two comp and eq treatments in a single channel. MONEY SAVED.

Been in audio engineering since 2008; very good advice Barry !!!!
Saw the new neve channel strip on Sweetwater promo very very tempting as you said $2000 is still a good bargain for what it can do

had a whole studio just a couple months ago and sold almost everything for this exact reason. why have so many machines when you can have 2 pairs of channel strips with everything you need.

I love the idea of having a pair of Neve and API channel strips each. Perhaps one day!

I wonder if you can help me are Channel Strips only meant for non electronic music, as in do they have any use in making Electronic Music?

Use plug ins. Get your signal into your DAW, then manipulate the sound with plug ins. All of this outboard gear stuff is mainly nostalgia, or something to brag about. $2000 is a lot of money, especailly when you consider how many features you can get for far less, on a humble mixing board. Most of your audience won't know if you spent $400 or $2000.

I want to get a warm WA2A cause I what to pair it with my UA 6176 as a classic vocal chain but I wonder if Getting the RND newton would be a better bang for my buck at the moment and maybe get the Wa2a later down the line?

Another informative and entertaining video. Are there any plans for a video which describes your hybrid setup? I know you moved to Cubase in order to maximize your new Mixing Control Surfaces and I am curious how you have incorporated the analog and digital. You touched on it a bit in this video where you explained DAW to Channel Strip back to DAW workflow. Thanks, Gary

I used to like channel strips but now I prefer separate plugins for saturation, compression, and eq, then I add corrective plugins if needed like de-essing and "soothing." It's not unusual for me to load 2 or 3 eq's on a single channel. Sometimes a prefer different eq's for cutting, boosting or a quick correcting at the end of a chain. Then I'll add Slates Trimmer to set level so I don't have to use my fader once it's set.

My issue with the channel strip scenario is that I don’t need a million preamps.. i wish there were more channel strips that only had a line input to lower cost for preamps I won’t need at all. A lot of them stereo link, which offsets my preamp gripe

Funny enough I’ve been eyeing a Presonus Studio Channel for about a week now. Does anyone have any opinions on this unit? I’ve got a Drawmer MX30 compressor it’s decent but automatic and I’m starting to actually understand compression a bit and want to experiment with it.
