When I lived in New York, money disappeared too easily on these small trifles. The people I knew who did very well for themselves chose not to spend anything at all--not on coffee, lunch, conveniences. I ate out only twice a week. Never took a taxi. Packed a boiled egg in my bag for a daily energy boost. My major expense was the metro.
