Notes

• The Celtic and Anglo-Saxon borders of the early Middle Ages (c. 400-800) are conjectural and rely partially on the borders of English counties, which were established later
• There appears to be some dispute as to whether Sir Herbert was made Earl of Pembroke in 1521, or 1551
• The title of 'Prince of Wales' was usually held by the king of England's heir after 1284, not by the king himself, though in practice it was simply an extension of his power
• Kilbarth/Scolton, Lamphey, and Warren were part of Dewisland, not Camrose/Haverford, as is erroneously shown in the video (we figured this out after the slides had been made).

For those wonder, I am still working on the Holy Roman Empire project, but it is still some months away from completion. Thanks for your patience!

Man seeing Wales briefly unite then fall apart was depressing.

Keep in mind that Wales is about the size of Slovenia or Massachusetts, so those principalities are very, very small. And yet the country has an amazing amount of history.

The counties changed in 1974 to 8 counties. And in 1996 the counties changed again from 8 to 22 counties, some of the old counties ( pre 1974 ) have come back like Denbighshire, Flintshire and they are new counties like Wrexham, Conwy, city of Cardiff. Great video👍

It's poetic how near the end the old Welsh principalities come back as devolved counties after centuries of English/British direct rule.

Amazing stuff! One small question, wouldn't the Tudors count as both an English and Welsh house?

It blows my mind that Roman successor states were still kicking around in the late middle ages.

Pangewrn was actually the unified kingdom and Powys comes from the latin pagan meaning rural as it was the rural highlands that broke off from the rest of Panmgewrn.

Quite remarkable how the Welsh managed to better preserve their language than their Celtic brothers. I always have in mind the song Yma o Hyd (Ry'n ni Yma o Hyd means "We're still here') by Dafydd Iwan.
