BMW 840i Gran Coupe Review | CarsIreland.ie

There are currently 3 engines to choose from in the 8 Series Gran Coupe line-up, one diesel and two petrols. The 840d diesel is the ubiquitous 3 litre turbo and you can also have the 850i with a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 for 530hp. Both are only available in 4 wheel drive at the minute.

Today we are testing the entry level 3 litre straight six with two turbos bolted on for good measure. Its good for 340 horsepower, 500 nm of torque from 1600 revs and will sprint to 100kmh in 5.2 seconds and top out at 250kmh. Prices start at €104,014 and the car tested today is €123,804.

Its could well be the best engine in the World, but with such a slow 0-100 I wonder are BM undermapping it to keep it off the 850 coat tails. Its a handsome enough car, but its a lump and if I was spending 123k I'd want to discourage carrying passengers rather than the opposite. For me the 440i GC is the best combo with that 6-cylinder. Amusing review nonetheless!
