On a cruise ship with literally thousands of people, your cruise cabin is your own private piece of the ship that's yours and yours alone. It's where you'll sleep, relax, get ready for the day, make romance, and shower... although maybe not all in that order.

After nearly 30 cruises, I've learned a thing or two when it comes to cabin tips that I think no cruise passenger should sail without. Some are common sense, some very few know. But if you're about to sail, here's what you want to know.

A tip for eating in your cabin. If you don't want to leave plates in your cabin or in the hall, just make sure you DON'T put them on your balcony. Birds can be attracted to it and sometimes they get stuck on the part lower than the balcony glass and can't figure out how to fly up and away. Or the birds might go in your cabin if your balcony door is open and food is near the balcony. Please don't ask me how I know about this...

Few hacks we have found helpful :
1) we have a simple metal travel safe, it has a smooth plastic coated wire that I attach to the bed frame separate from my suitcase under there. (ie, it will sit between our suitcases)
2) laptop bag safe is just like that as well
3) walks are metal, bring hook magnets
4) we have a lanyard that hooks through a hole we ask to be punched. When we are in the cabin using the key card for lights, we loop the land yard over the door handle or use a magnetic hook to hold up the lanyard cord to eye level…. Never forgot the room card that way.

If you bring magnetic hooks out one right by the door and hang your card there and it will be almost impossible to forget. Some lines let you is any old card to operate lights so I use old gift card. Use your lockable suitcase as an extra safe.

Had issues on 2 cruises with the safe door malfunctioning when trying to open. Was instructed by the head housekeeper to avoid having any items inside anywhere near the inside of the safe door. Don't overfill it or the door mechanism can get blocked. It only happens at the most inopportune times.

Norwegian cruise has the greatest system in case you get lost or turned around on the ship. You just look at the carpet and you follow the way the Fishies are swimming so if you just tell yourself, just keep swimming, you’ll know which way and you’ll never get lost again pretty smart, huh?😊😊😊

I like to keep my items in the safe in a gallon ziplock so I don't forget any small items

Check function of the closet door and cupboard doors. As well as the safe door, even if you don't use it. Lock it up. At night while you are sleeping the ship will be rocking and these doors will swing. Banging against other cupboards, waking you up wondering what that sound is

Great information!! I got locked out my cabin for the first time after placing my luggage out the night before disembarking. Luckily my room steward was servicing a room a few doors down and let me back in! Crisis averted!😂

I've seen a few of these cruising do's & don'ts and I can't believe people don't know about NOT having 'front' and 'back' doors open at the same time without a closed door in between!

Do NOT flush wipes in the marine toilet!
Instead use the litter box.
Even napkins or thicker paper will cause problems in the water system

I bring a spare card for the ships nlyhat need one for the lights and I have a magnetic hook that I hand my room key on right over the door knob so I have a very low chance of forgetting it when I walk out.

A lot of these tips, you can also use in a hotel. most hotels also have keycards for the lights and you can forget them to. same hotels have thin walls. always handy

I like other comment to bring plastic bag for smaller items inside safe! I had tried white cloth to lay things on. True always check everything in cabin upon arrival

I’m an older lady that has ALWAYS had to touch something with a wet paint sign to see if it is still wet. I have done this since I was a kid and don’t think I will change now. So the next time I sail in a cabin with

#2 is easily solved by refusing cabin steward service. We’ve done it on every cruise we’ve been on, dozens of them, the longest being 15 days. Just go to guest service and request it when you embark and they’ll never enter your room. #10 is easily solved by getting two key cards per person. Same thing, go to guest services and get a second when you embark. Never been an issue.
