Digital Twins: A Practitioner’s View
Rusty Irving, retired GE Digital Twin GEN Mgr & Chief Engineer
Department of Computer Science
Siena College

In recent year’s one of the latest buzzwords in the fields of computing, modeling, artificial intelligence and others is “Digital Twin”. Rusty Irving is one of the pioneer’s in the development of Digital Twins. Digital Twins are a capstone of his life’s work as he is also a pioneer in “The Internet of Things”. In 2005 he gave the first ever public lecture on that topic. It is still available on iTunes as a video. (Search on “Rusty Irving UMBC”.) He has given international keynote speeches on Digital Twin.

In this talk Rusty will provide the context (history) from which Digital Twins have evolved. This context is important as it helps calibrate what Digital Twins can and can’t do today. With this context the talk will cover:

Industrial Digital Twin Definition Explained
Industrial Digital Twin Examples
A Human Digital Twin Example
How to Build Digital Twins: What You Need to Know
When this talk is complete the audience will understand that Digital Twins are a means to an end and not an end in themselves. They are expensive to build and must have a predetermined purpose so that their value is understood before endeavoring to build them. This understanding will be fostered through the audience participation nature of the presentation.
