1. The canton of Basel-Landschaft is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland. The Canton of Basel Land at the gates of the city of Basel boasts a variety of beautiful landscapes, impressive natural and cultural jewels. There is a lot to discover in the region of Basel, whether one travels in the footsteps of the Romans, cruises on the Rhine, or undertakes a biking tour in the Jura.

2. The lands of the canton Basel-Landschaft are part of the lands acquired by the city of Basel. Until the end of the 16th century, most of the canton's land belonged to the city of Basel. The country was economically dependent on the city, most probably because of the low level of education in the agricultural areas at the time. After 1830 there were political quarrels and armed conflict in the canton of Basel. Some of these were concerned with the rights of the population in the agricultural areas. They ultimately led to the separation of the canton Basel-Landschaft from the city of Basel on 26 August 1833. Since then, there has been a movement for reunification. This movement gained momentum after 1900 when many parts of Basel-Landschaft became industrialized. The two half cantons agreed in principle to merge, but in 1969 the people of Basel-Landschaft voted down a referendum on this proposal in favour of retaining their independence.

3. In Roman times, the area of Basel was a centre of Roman activity. There are well-preserved remains at the site of Augusta Raurica in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Around 200 AD there were about 20,000 people living in this city, now part of the much smaller Augst. The remains are on display in an open-air museum. The museum attracts over 140,000 visitors per year. Many of these visitors are schoolchildren from other parts of Switzerland. The site of Augusta Raurica includes the best-preserved amphitheatre north of the Alps, and a reconstructed Roman villa.

4. Liestal is the capital of Liestal District and the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The name Liestal was first mentioned in 1225, and the settlement dates at least from Roman times. The Depot of Archeology of Basel-land, the Frenkenbrücke (bridge), the Munzach which was a Roman farmhouse, the Roman aqueduct and the Cantonal Archive of Basel-Landschaft are listed as Swiss heritage site of national significance. The entire old town of Liestal is listed in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

5. On the Sunday night after Mardi Gras, Chienbäse is celebrated with a spectacular parade and bonfires, from which the celebration takes its name. The tradition goes back at least to the 16th century. Other towns in the neighborhood also celebrate in a similar manner.

6. In 2013, Basel-Landschaft had 281,112 inhabitants, 18.1% of whom were foreigners. Most of the residents are German-speaking. The most populated church in the Evangelical Lutheran Church was 43% of the population in 2000 and 32% of the Catholic. Between 1959 and 1970, the population in this canton increased the most; practically doubled from 108 thousand to 205 thousand.

7. The Jura mountain chain traverses the canton. The name "Jura" is derived from juria, a Latinized form of a Celtic stem jor- "forest". The mountain range gives its name to the French department of Jura, the Swiss Canton of Jura, the Jurassic period of the geologic timescale, and the Montes Jura of the Moon.
