I've been flat hunting in Brighton, and it's worth having the Rightmove and Zoopla apps on your phone, and setting up notifications when a property in your search criteria comes up so you can get on the phone to arrange a viewing quickly.

Honestly it’s been a nightmare ! My partner is in London while I’m overseas moving in a month and it’s been so hard. He would have a viewing for later in the day because of work and around lunch time he will get a call telling him the place is taken. Or I will find a place in the morning and within 2 hours before we even get a chance to call it’s off the market.

Twice we had to put in an offer based on a video tour alone because there were already offers on a flat gone up two hours before. Also was in a bidding war. London renting is mad and it sucked. But got there after two so at least it didn't drag out

Rental market is insane in every single city on the planet unless you have a $4k-$10k USD budget. So many places are getting taken sight unseen. Deposits and applications are being put down for places as soon as they’re posted. I’ve had places disappear within 30 mins of being posted. I don’t even live in a big city either.
