My First Attempt At Free Bees (Swarm Traps)

So it is time for us to get serious about bees! We have never owned bees but I have been learning about the bee and how to take care of them for a little over a year. But the last few weeks bee info has been the only thing I've been consuming and I think I'm ready. We are going to start by trying to catch our own bees. There are many different reasons for this and you'll have to watch the video to find out.
THANK YOU!

Good job mate. I’ve caught five swarms so far. Maybe consider putting your swarm into a log hive. Also putting your trap up 10 to 15 feet.

Ya all that is perfect---when you added an old frame of wax with propolis on it along with Swarm Commander, which I prefer, it work's every time. I believe it's a combination of all three things. And I believe Swarm Commander will work better for several reasons. That lemon grass oil disappears after 3-4 days and you keep having to reapply. Where swarm commander has a super lure that will last 90 days

Hey Bill, this is awesome! I just started keeping bees last year, but I bought a package from a local bee farm (I have some videos on my channel about my bee hive). This year I want to build a horizontal hive and catch a swarm (for some reason, here in Arizona, the bees seem to swarm all year long).

Just be careful of putting too much lemongrass oil around, because the bees will find it repulsive. From what I've read and heard, you want to soak one end of the q-tips once, and put some oil on the tops of the frames, and then soak the other end and spread it around the entrance. Then grab one of those small ziplock bags and put the q-tip in the back, and drop the bag into the bottom of the hive or swarm trap. If I remember correctly, that should last a week to two weeks.

One of the channels I watch is Barnyard Bees. He's got a lot of good information on bee keeping, though I don't necessarily agree with everything he says and does. Also look up Dr Leo Sharaskhin, he has been featured a few times (with some excellent swarm trapping advice) on the Off Grid with Doug and Stacy channel.

All the best with your bee keeping!

Once you have punctured the sapwood and gone into the heartwood it doesn't matter how far you go in to the heartwood, so in future you might as well use longer screws. Longer screws are more stable so often end up doing less damage to the tree in the long run.

Once you get your bees are you going to use queen excluders or are you going to let the hives split and swarm naturally every once in a while?

Lovely woods you have there, so serene.

Catching a swarm is a great way to start. Best wishes.

I know cody used the lemon grass to flavor the sugar he placed in his haves to help them live trough winter.

First I hear about lemon grass being similar to pheromones

good luck! i've always wanted to do the same since i saw Leo Sharaskin's talks about native swarms in 2016. Pity the pathetic procrastinator that is me.

Nice to see and best of luck with the traps. Dr Leo is a great one to watch on swarm catching and bees. Just found your channel last night and have watched a heap of your content, great presentation.

We just started bees this year as well. I did exactly as you with your hive hoping to lure a swarm directly. I’ll have to look into those actual swarm traps though! 👍
