Denise Mueller-Korenek is the Fastest Person on a Bike EVER

It’s a feat inconceivable to most sound-minded mortals: This past Sunday, Denise Mueller-Korenek rode a bicycle more than 180 mph—183.93 to be exact, which is faster than the takeoff speed of an Airbus A340—and crushed the motor-paced bicycle land speed record.

I looked this up after someone mentioned this record to me. First, let me acknowledge that it takes some real guts to attempt this record, and it's a really neat accomplishment on paper, or for bragging rights at the bar. But, for folks without an understanding of aerodynamics, or for folks without a cycling background, I think it's easy to overlook how significant the role of the tow vehicle was in allowing for this record. Beyond just significantly accelerating the bike into a usable gear range, its most notable role is that it effectively eliminated the enormous drag caused by the wind resistance at these speeds (in fact, it probably provided some "suck" to help pull the bike along). Even at just 25 mph, air resistance represents 90% of the force that a bicycle rider needs to overcome, and drag only continues to increase exponentially as speed increases. So, while this is technically a cool record, it's worth pointing out that there are probably a number of really strong riders out there who could do the same thing, under the same conditions, if they had the combination of the equipment and guts to try it.

To me this record is most interesting from the engineering perspective. And, I suppose records exist in different categories for a reason.

Let’s get a few things nice and sparkling clear. Before you say this is cheating, let a hot rod enthusiast explain a few things. The bicycle’s geared for top speed at the expense of acceleration, so it needs to be towed to a certain speed before being released. You see this at the dry lakes and salt flats, where the world’s fastest cars are pushed off the line by a truck for the exact same reason. The lakester she rides behind is just there to serve that role, then it acts as a battering ram to create a pocket of clean air for her to ride in once she gets to speed. Have you ever drafted behind a lorry or bus before? It’s exactly the same thing.

Denise Mueller-Korenek라는 사람이 페이스카 뒤에서 드래프팅 250인가 296인가 찍은 것 같던데 바이크 절대 못 이긴다고 기록 찾다가 ㅅㅂ 뭔 말도 안 되는 기록을 찾았네 ㅋㄱㅋㄱㅋㅋ 일단 어지간한 선수 데려와서 온갖 기술 다 처박은 자전거에 페이스카까지 끼는 게 아닌 이상 스쿠터도 이기기 어려운 게 현실임

the rest is physics, get pulled to max speed, gets released, stays within the wind draft which sucks her forward anyway

....but.. the majority of her speed is a result of the wind tunnel and suction provided by the vehicle, which eliminates air friction, the primary resisting factor... I mean this like saying someone broke the 100m word record while they have a massive fan blowing 75 mph wind behind them blowing them them forward.

I wouldn't bet I could do better, im sure she's in fantastic shape, but still, there needs to be an asterisk next to the record solely because it's just misleading.
