(0:52 - 1:00) Leguizamo's character says "The board is fine spending $400 on footballs, but not sending kids on a road trip to improve their minds". That line, by itself, made me give this trailer a thumbs up. That line probably best captures the absurd priorities of our academic institutions, both at a K thru 12 and collegiate level. It is no wonder America is falling behind the rest of the world academically.

"Stand and Deliver" meets "Searching for Bobby Fischer."

"A hundred percent it’s a Miami story, and it’s a love letter to Miami Jackson Senior High School and Miami in the '90s"

The movie centers on five of the chess players from Miami Jackson's team in 1998: Oelmy "Ito" Paniagua, Gil Luna, Rodelay Medina, Sedrick Roundtree, and Marcel Martinez. As it turns out, four of the actors portraying those characters have connections to Miami. (Miami New Times)

I just saw this film and I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm an expert level chess player and overall I really enjoyed the film. There wasn't as much chess as I would have liked but that is to be expected to reach a wider audience. The storyline, energy, and pace was all great. The characters were great and relatable. One of the nicest things was the effort to legitimize the game towards the end with the way the games were shown. I hope more chess films do something similar in the future. I highly recommend this film for anyone who likes an underdog and inspirational story.

It was nice to see that they all survived and lived full lives. I was afraid that part of the plot was going to be that Ito got gunned down by the drug dealers. Also great to see him talking about showing others a different way to escape that neighborhood and the problems with the life that forces on its residents.

I mean... It's built around chess.
That's just a good idea, is all.
And I'm complete garbage at chess.

I feel like I saw a different version of this movie when I was a kid. It was called the Mighty Pawns and starred Alfonso Ribeiro. I loved it. My brother and I must have watched it over 50 times. Hopefully this movie does well.

One thing I liked was the portrayal of lots of women playing competitively. Like all sports (within physical size limitations), women can play as well as men, and should be given the chance. And just like women now do important jobs is computing, science, math, etc without it being considered "weird", so it should be with games like chess, go, othello, etc.

So great to see that. And I say this as a 63 year old man who used to see only the RARE woman play in rated tournaments (often the girlfriend of a top player, apparently traveling with him, playing as a typical club level player), back 40 to 30 years ago when I played in USCF tournaments a lot (both small and big events).

It looks good. I really liked "Queen of Katwe" and "Life of a King" which had a very similar premise, so I will give this a chance.
