"They lived in a home with their father or husband who had power over them" That's one way to look at it. Another way would be that women lived in homes paid for by their fathers and husbands.

I seem to understand history a little differently. I thought the Victorian Era was the period in which Queen Victoria ruled England. What brought about the end of the Victorian Era was old age.
