Terrifier 3 $2 Million Budget Has Almost Doubled Megalopolis’ Box Office $120 Million Budget

The new horror film Terrifier 3 has made over $18 million dollars at the box office in its opening weekend which it did with just a $2 million dollar production budget. While the new $120 million dollar film Megalopolis has managed to make just about $10 million dollars in 3 weeks. We take a look at the contrast between the 2 and ask which is actually the bigger story.

Terrifier 3 is a home run. This is not a movie for a casual horror fan like Smile was. This is a movie for hardcore horror fans, and for it to be #1 at the box office with over 23 million dollars worldwide opening is absolutely incredible.

They utilized their marketing budget really well. It felt like Art was everywhere, particularly on social media. He even had his own bar of blood soap.

I think you nailed it. $18 million and counting on a 2 million budget and only $500K on marketing. That makes the $18 million+ extremely impressive. Also, 3 of the movies Terrifier 3 beat were in 1, 000 - 1, 500 more theaters. So when you break down the per theater average, Terrifier averaged over $7k, while the closest competitor averaged $3k per theater and everyone else was $1-2K per theater. Bloody Disgusting, among others, is being credited as one of the major forces behind the marketing campaign. Very, very impressive.

Terrifier 3 is going to be well over $30 million after three weekends. A 60% drop would put it at $26 million after two weekends and that ignores Monday-Thursday so even if it takes a gargantuan drop, it'll probably be close to $30 million by this time next week. Today is also a holiday so it should make more than on a typical Monday.

The Terrifier hype is organic. The original probably had a marketing budget of $0. Much as studios try, you can't buy word of mouth. Just find your fanbase and cater to them without pandering.

I loved Terrifier 3. I'm not even a gore hound, but I think if you take the gore away the characters and performances are so good it still a great movie. I think if you like slashers the gore might be a bit too much for many (in some scenes it was for me) but Sienna and Art are just so good that I'm completely hooked on these movies. If you have only seen the first, try the other two. I didn't really like the first but I ended up LOVING 2 and 3.

I remember my brother driving two hours to see Terrifier 2 because the local theater wasn't showing the movie; people love this franchise for some reason. I see that this time, more theaters are showing Terrifier 3.

i love Terrifier 3. i’m glad people are recognizing this franchise. when i first saw Terrifier when it first came out i wasn’t crazy about it. then Terrifier 2 came out years later and it became one of my favorite slashers ever. and Terrifier 3 is just as good as 2 i think. my biggest complaint with both is that 2 drags a little and 3 could’ve used another 10-15 minutes. aside from that, it’s a very solid movie

The correct take is that a $2 million film is going to gross approximately $38 million. This and Longlegs have done a lot for the 2024 box office and their successes should be greatly praised. On the other hand, Horizon, Joker, and Megalopolis have hurt the box office tremendously. We need to spend money EFFICIENTLY to get desired results.
