Deep Dive: Scale Sequencing

Practicing scales can sometimes seem like a waste of time. Yet these structures are the core material that music is made from.

Scale Sequencing allows us to inject some variety into our scale study while also developing a wider capability to synchronize our hands through the different patterns that the sequences generate.

But sequencing is a two-part task. In this video I walk through how to sequence scales. Learning this skill is far more valuable than any single sequence could ever be.

Thank you so much. I’ve just spent approximately 3 months experimenting with the 24 finger permutations to the extent that I’ve accidentally memorised them all.

I’ve been nudging myself towards incorporating them into the specific degrees of all modes of the major scale, in order drill my ability to target specific tones.

This upload is the next step in helping me look like I know what I’m doing when improvising. Thank you so much.

Hay Chris! Been experimenting with this and Love it! Found a new variation, pick two strings and do the same ascending and descending as described here only on those two strings.. its really helping map out the caged boxes! Bit of a teeth grinder at first but its a goody.. Thank you for the inspiration 🙏🕊️✨

Haaaa! More scale finger-puzzles to solve!

All joking aside, I see the value of designing and deploying scale sequences beyond mere “dexterity exercises”. Used “thoughtfully”, and actually deploying sequences hand-in-hand with chord changes in mind, can make for interesting solo and melody ideas!

Awesome! Thanks! By the way Chris, I'm trying to send you a quick message related to guitar. Is there a good place or email I can send that at? Thanks again!
