Simeon Robert Oliphant - A Jack The Ripper Suspect 1888.

In October 1888, Simeon Robert Oliphant was arrested at King Street Police Station in Westminster, when he "offered" to cut off the duty sergeant's head and restore it again.

It was noticed that he bore a resemblance to the descriptions then circulating of a man wanted for questioning in connection with the Whitechapel murders.

He didn't help himself when it was discovered that he had told the manager of a shop that he was, in fact, Jack the Ripper.

How he was let out so many times is unfathomable.

Surely there must have been a number of people giving false confessions. I'd like to hear about some of those cases.

Arrested for being a lunatic? Sounds about right. I can only imagine the interesting characters that the MP had to deal with. Excellent presentation as always 🍻

Serial murderers are able to commit their crimes, by the very nature of not presenting as psycopathic or deranged. They may be charming and manipulative, hiding in plain sight; loners or married with children. They can be your neighbour, your partner, your father...If they ran around threatening police officers, they wouldn't get very far in their murderous endeavours! 😂

The fact the murders were committed so close together and then suddenly stopped seems a big clue. History has shown that violent criminals don't usually stop unless they have to. Profiling would suggest the perpetrator left the area but continued to murder until he was either caught or died. Or both? That's what more recent serial killers have tended to do.

That was a good video, Richard. Quick question: Where on Walworth Road was the asylum?

He couldn't have been Kelly's murderer because he was in the Bethnal Green asylum then. However, I don't think we can be certain that Kelly was Ripper murder. Is there any other reason that he couldn't have been the Ripper besides his having an alibi for the Kelly murder? Admittedly, if he really was 67 at the time, that would make him a longshot.

Newspaper stories about the murders and the theoretical suspect (JTR) made millions of dollars on newspaper sales, the stories from the papers created one sensational lead after another, sold papers and made rich and powerful people more even more wealthy; I wonder if the police of today, would of tied everything up into one suspect, or would have focused on individual deaths. I just sense that the newspapers really loved the ''Jack The Ripper'' stories they printed. and did not want the stories to stop.
