Is This Concerning?

Most e-sport forbid competition to players under 16, for the same reason: It’s very isolating, and they get exploited by companies to participate. Chess should do the same.

Finally, a video that focuses on the real issue: parents living vicariously through their children, who end up suffering and cannot live as children.

The funny thing if a player is not a top-30, chess won't make a living

the difference between a game addiction and talent is how much the public approves of it

Most likely the parents’ greed. I hope they genuinely come to enjoy chess.

This is only new to the chess world
Think spelling bee, little league, math symposiums, gymnastics, even dance moms and so on
Kids have been pushed into things by their parents for a long time. It's just spreading into new communities... :(
We can only hope that the true talent rises to the top and that the kids who don't have their heart in it can find an outlet they truly enjoy

I literally feel so bad when i see those kids cause i've been playing since im 7 (im 16 now) and im not "good enough". I've stopped playing several times because of depression, lack of money and other reasons and that makes me feel that im taking 3 steps forward and 2 steps back (sorry if my english is not good!)

I think, what you just said, doesnt only apply to chess, but also to the society to a large extent. In the Indian society, Engineers and Doctors are worshipped and seen as "top of the class" by most parents. Hence many parents force their children to become one of them. Thank God people are startung to realise this.

I used to play chess for about 10 years competitively. I started at 10/11 because I was genuinely interested in the game. But as it got more competitive with every year I couldn't keep up but was doing more and more and woth time it felt like it was never enough. It crushed me. I met so many lovely people which kept me way longer in the game than anticipated but also a lot more sane because they were going through the same thing. I fell depressed and didn't had any self worth a long time. I feel so sorry for everyone who has gone through a similar situation. I feel so much better since I quit and seeing someone play chess still makes me feel bittersweet.

my bestfriend cousin reached GM at 16 yo he was playing since he was 5. he committed suicide when he was 17 from the pressure from his parents and the decline of his studies. he's always been sensitive about the topic of chess he couldn't even see chess as a game but a serious sports. when others mentions how he's a child prodigy chess player i can see a sadness and discomfort when im around him

Someone else mentioned in the comment section that you can't compete as an e-sport player if you are younger than 16 years old. And I think this is a good practice, that all other sports governing bodies should employ to protect kids from situations like these.

You want a funny story?
The boy you showed when saying "3 y.o." is my ex classmate's son (we are from Moscow, Russia). Her husband had some kind of a weird "making genius kids" school/teaching system he practiced? And they literally made the kid their project, made him participate in tv show everyone takes this fragment from 😂 idk when I last spoke to her she told me how they trear their kid (no games of any kind except chess allowed, no tv time at all, no cartoons, nothing beside education and/or extra curriculum) I thought that was kinda crazy... so I hope he's growing up alright... (doubt it, since she's a crazy b**** and her husband is weird af)

I once played in a local tournament against a kid. The kids face was just depressing. No excitement of event, no lively vibe of a kid, not even shy. He beat me easily but I felt sorry for him.

Excelling at something is good but on your death bed - trophies and certificates won't come to see you. Stop pushing children towards perfection at young age that takes away their childhood!

chess can absolutely be a fun social experience, sad that these kids are pressured to perform so much that they don’t get to experience that

This happens often in music as well. Child prodigies have so much stress from an early age and they get very isolated socially. Eventually they may lose the passion they had for their instruments or never gain one if they didn't have it because they grow to hate it.
It's a very interesting problem
