>Please do not try unless you have foam
Damn right!!!

My first pair of nunchaku were made from oak. After 3 years, a ton of bruises and one hairline fracture that ended up healing without issue, I would trust my life to 'em in a brawl any day of the week except gunday. Outside of flourishes and tricks, most underestimate their ease of use.

My first sanjiegun was made from wenge.
I gave myself a nice bruise all the way across my abdomen and then on the back of my knee in one fumble. I'm still awkward with my foam-clad PVC sanjiegun after 2 years, yet I've never touched a pair of foam nunchaku.

Yes, they look very similar.
Yes, they're both classified as sectional flails because they can execute a majority of their non-sectional counterparts' techniques.
No, in reality they're about as similar as a staff and a fighting stick. A sanjiegun is a two-handed weapon; even double nunchaku doesn't prepare you to keep *both* hands *and* your core synchronized with *two* pivots. Manipulating it is almost nothing like nunchaku; while one of the main requirements for avoiding fumbles is similar to stabilizing a staff at full-speed, except any hesitation is instantly punished with a full-power strike right back at you. You have to know how to start, and how to stop.

If you see someone doing anything other than self-flagellation with a wooden (or, deity-forbid, metal) sanjiegun, know that they've been at it for years and are very impressive, disciplined, and; most importantly; badass human beings.

That last movement is awesome! The only one I haven't tried yet. I know what I'm doing today 😊

I don’t know. I wield tri-staff and am rather scared of the chain whip. Things that can wrap your limbs build speed right before cracking you. I’d also say spinning the tri-staff is only good for skill and transitions. Probably wouldn’t do it in a fight.

It really is heavy, not some light nunchucks many are used to.
