✅Are you excited to see Aloy on the big screen?

Id rather they have had a series on things like the Clawback

A movie feels unecessary

"Early stage of development" sounds to me like "We were talking during our lunch break the other day and someone said: Hey, let's make a Horizon movie!". I'd really like to see that movie, but for now I'm not holding out any hope that it will actually happen.

Honestly having David Harewood play Sylens would probably be the easiest choice they could do. In both the 3rd game as in the movie.
Because David looks similar to Lance and even have a voice and mimic that isn’t that far off.
For me personally he would be the perfect choice but I don’t know how David Harewood would feel to play Sylens and having to do a role again only because Lance Reddick passed away. I of course talk about David Harewood performance of Warlin Door in Alan Wake 2 which would have been played/voice by Lance Reddick.

as long as it doesn't get the borderlands treatment, a geriatric Aloy and Jack Black as Rost.
Amazon could do a good job with the world, the world from Fallout Series could pass for HZD, just add robot dinosaurs.

Oh my goodness.... Now that I realized, I hope this doesn't become another Last Airbender Shamalan disaster. Agree, horizon is soo dense with story, I doubt you can reasonably fit everything in 2 hours.

Also, I've now accepted the possibly of Sylens with a different face, instead of getting using CGI, Saves cost, and less chances of messing things up.

I really liked the first game (played ~5 times on hardest difficulty) specifically the story was cool and the gameplay was relatively easy but still very fun.
I'm not enthusiastic about a movie adaptation

I honestly don’t care for the movie if it is just a retelling of Aloys first game.

Having something about Liz and or Faro would have been way cooler.

Hell I think an SW Rogue One type of movie would be great as well. Where we follow a group of soldiers wo decimate a Horus etc. just to give zero dawn those precious weeks/days to archive their mission.
I would even prefer that because it would be a movie with a bitter sweet ending. And if that movie hits you might either play the games or do movies about those games.

Thanks for this breakdown Chazz. I agree with much of your pro's/con's list, and they are all valid concerns. There is so much lore and world building and character arcs that one movie couldn't do justice to Horizon, even if it ends up being a decent production. But we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope that they end up doing it right

Oh, Chaz. Where do I start?

First, the screen cut of Uncharted is a bit misleading, don't you think? I mean, it was a box office success, grossing over $407.1 million worldwide on a $120 million budget, making it the fifth-highest-grossing video game film of all time. A sequel is in development, even. The Tomb Raider movies with Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander didn't do too badly either. Just sayin'. A dash of skepticism is of course natural, but hope springs eternal and all that. 😀

Next, series vs. movie. While I agree with you about Netflix series being underwhelming as a rule, HBO doesn't get it right all the time either. Game of Thrones was a victim of its own success because they outran the source material (I'm looking at you, procrastinating George R.R. Martin). That's always a risk with series development. As for a movie treatment, "... one and a half to two hours [to tell the full story]..." - have you seen how long movies are today? Ideally, a series of three seasons, each with 6-8 hour long episodes, roughly paralleling the games would be ideal.

Lance Reddick's (RIP) portrayal of Sylens will always be epic. But before you change his character's role to un-clutter its nuances and depth, consider Idris Elba (see "Phantom Liberty" for reference) or Giancarlo Esposito.

Hugh Jackman's role in "Logan" is so reminiscent of the gruff father role of Rost - he could do it. Also Josh Brolin.

Finally, Aloy. In the games, she is 19 years old. That would be a bit of a stretch for Rose Leslie or Sophie Turner or Karen Gillan though all of them have the acting chops. So keeping it believable, Sadie Sink or Ashley Burch or Hannah Hoekstra herself.

The simple fact is that they will not have the necessary amount of time and a movie to do the game justice. A show is the only way to make Horizon into a live action production.

As you pointed out, the proof is in games that have been turned into shows and movies before. The movies almost invariably flop and the shows stand a reasonable chance at performing well.

Sure, Netflix isn't the ideal first choice, but Amazon, or HBO could do it justice. I'd rather go another 3-5 years without an adaptation than get a movie that bombs so bad that that the franchise becomes radioactive and no one wants to touch it for another 10-15 years (looking at you Eragon.)

I would rather have a movie.. but I hope they dont take too many liberties and mix too much stuff. Uncharted was lost and poorly cast
