When you think of Christmas traditions, do you imagine arson and destruction?

Since 1966, a town in Sweden has built a 40-foot statue of a goat, and almost every year since then, people have been determined to destroy it.
The hay goat has been set on fire with fireworks and burning arrows, run over by cars, smashed with clubs, and, according to legend, someone even tried to steal it using a helicopter. This bizarre tradition has become so infamous that people now bet on whether or not the goat will survive the holiday season.

Over the years, authorities have hired guards to protect the goat, installed video surveillance, and even doused the hay statue in flame retardant. Despite these efforts, people continue to come up with elaborate ways to destroy it.

If you’re interested in strange and fascinating facts, follow along! I create videos about all things intriguing and horrific, and I’ll be sharing more holiday-themed facts this month.

I was about to ask about the American tourist.
Yeah, HE THOUGHT IT WAS A TRADITION TO BURN THE GOAT. I find it funny because this means he heard it a few times and decided to it was a tradition

We do this too in my village, its not really a country tradition thing but we do it here. We gather old wooden furniture, sometimes boats, toys, or just things you can burn that are not able to be used anymore. Its a tradition to show that you start every year with something new, and that you need to leave things behind that arent usable anymore

About an hour away from New Orleans theres a town where they build giant barn fires, (boats, bears, nutcrackers, etc) all along the levee by the Mississippi River and light them on fire, it’s to help Santa find his way to the kids in a small Southern town ❤ gets pretty packed with spectators, it’s a big family tradition to some folks, beautiful to see both before and after they’ve been lit 🔥

That's hilarious! I'd never heard of this before. Thanks, Billy for telling us about it! According to the list, I counted only 16 times it survived out of 58 years. I love that for 2006 it says "survived with mild scorching." LOL! 😃

In Finland the verb for Burning and coming back is the same so every year we have news titles exploiting this to get clicks with the goat :D
